Whiplash

iTunes’ shuffle feature can be pretty jarring at times. It just played “Don’t Worry About the Government” by Talking Heads (sample lyric: “some civil servants are just like my loved ones”), “Hit ‘Em Up” by 2pac* (sample lyric: “that’s why I f**ked your bitch, you fat motherf**ker”), and “Perfect Circle” by R.E.M. (sample lyric: “standing too soon, shoulders high in the room”). All in a row. Yeah, that was interesting.

* I was listening for the beat, I swear.

  1. Ah, you kids with your ‘jarring variation in iTunes music.’ Here’s a sample of what happens when I shuffle my library:

“The Great Litany” – Rachmaninov: The Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom Op. 31
    “Blue” – Mai Yamane
    “II: Allemande” – J.S. Bach Cello Suites 2, 3 & 6 – Mstislav Rostropovich
“Chemicals are our Friends” – Chris Knox
    “Failsafe” – New Pornographers
    “Sleepyhead” – The Pillows
“Why Can’t You Behave” – Cole Porter Songbook, Vol. 2 (Ella Fitzgerald)
“Grieg: From Holberg’s Time, Op. 40 – 4. Air – Andante Religioso” – Grieg: Peer Gynt Suites; Sibelius: Valse triste, Etc. (Herbert Von Karajan; Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra)
    “Drain You” – Nirvana
    Thank goodness for playlists….

  2. Here’s my shuffle:
    “Hit” – Sugarcubes
“Dazed and Confused” – Led Zeppelin
“Good Times” – Beenie Man (yes, I actually own some of his music)
    “Moon Sammy” – Soul Coughing
“I am the Walrus” – The Beetles
    “Ya Rayah” – Rachid Taha
“(White Man) In Hammersmith Palais” – The Clash
“The Woodlands National Anthem” – Arcade Fire
“Long Shadow” – Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros
“Istanbul (not Constantinople)” – They Might Be Giants
Today just as I was approaching a Starbucks, it started playing “Busting Up A Starbucks” by Mike Doughty.
