Significant

Via Josh Marshall comes this wonderful quote from Mark Penn:

Could we possibly have a nominee who hasn’t won any of the significant states — outside of Illinois? That raises some serious questions about Sen. Obama.

For the record, these are the states that Hillary Clinton’s chief strategist thinks are insignificant, with their electoral votes:

Alabama: 9
Alaska: 3
Colorado: 9
Connecticut: 7
Delaware: 3
Georgia: 15
Idaho: 4
Iowa: 7
Kansas: 6
Louisiana: 9
Maine: 4
Maryland: 10
Minnesota: 10
Missouri: 11
Nebraska: 5
North Dakota: 3
South Carolina: 8
Utah: 5
Virginia: 13
Washington: 11

That’s a total of 20 states, with 152 electoral votes. I’m being charitable to Penn and not including non-state DC, which brings the electoral vote total to 155. Even if we confine ourselves to clear swing states (Colorado, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, Virginia), it adds up 50 electoral votes. Could we have a nominee who insulted the voters of 5 critical swing states representing 50 electoral votes – more than the gap between Kerry and Bush and much more than the gap between Gore and Bush? That raises some serious questions about Sen. Clinton.
