…since Colin Powell went to the United Nations and ruined his reputation, and severely damaged that of the nation he was representing. Luckily, the United Nations didn’t fall for it, but good people like Tim Noah, an erstwhile opponent of the war, did. The sight of someone as eminently respectable as Powell telling the world he knew for a fact that Iraq had serious biochemical and nuclear weapons programs and substantial ties to terrorist groups, including al-Qaeda, led far too many otherwise sensible people to support the invasion that would commence a month later. Powell put his loyalty to his president above his loyalty to his country, and that’s something he’ll have to live with for the rest of his life. And indications are that he’s already finding that hard.
