Octopus Girl No More

An eight-limbed toddler has had surgery to get four of those limbs removed. Jill at Feministe congratulates her on the success of the surgery, and uses it as a jumping off point to talk about what this means about personhood (the girl, like Dwight Schrute, had a twin and resorbed her). I think Jill misses the point, which is that Lakshmi was once could reasonably refer to herself as Octopus Girl and now cannot, which is surely a tragedy. Superhero (or, better yet, supervillain) status isn’t something we should deny of children.
Um, actually, on second thought, maybe you wouldn’t want to be Octopus Girl.
