A National Crisis

I’ve been noticing a disturbing trend. In recent years, and in 2007 in particular, album art has gotten worse. Much worse. Take, for instance, Kanye West’s latest album, Graduation, which is currently flying off the shelves:

Compare to Kanye’s last album, Late Registration:

I don’t think there’s any contest there. But it’s not yet just Kanye. Compare Twin Cinemas, The New Pornographers’ 2005 album, to 2007’s Challengers:

Here’s The Apples in Stereo’s 2002 album Velocity of Sound, and their 2007 album New Magnetic Wonder:

Interpol’s 2004 Antics, and 2007’s Our Love to Admire:

Animal Collective’s Feels from 2005 and Strawberry Jam from 2007:

Björk’s 2004 album Medúlla, and 2007 album Volta:

M.I.A.’s Arular from 2005 and Kala from 2007:

And I could go on. Really, is it so hard to make an album cover in, say, Photoshop as opposed to KidPix? Surely there’s some kind of nanny state solution to this. It’d be totally unconstitutional, but seriously, that New Magnetic Wonder cover makes my eyes bleed.
