I used to have a kind of grudging respect for Tom Sowell. He worked his way up from nothing, because a very influential and important economist, and thus has much more credibility than most conservative pundits. Moreover, he seemed like a intellectually honest conservative pundit, which is quite rare, considering as David Brooks and Andrew Sullivan are, in the modern sense, really not very conservative. But my respect for him starts to go away when he says stuff like this (via Matt):
When I see the worsening degeneracy in our politicians, our media, our educators, and our intelligentsia, I can’t help wondering if the day may yet come when the only thing that can save this country is a military coup.
As Matt notes, there’s not context or elaboration to this. He just, as an afterthought, says that the US could use a military coup d’état. Didn’t there used to be laws against this? Not that there should be, but still, advocating the overthrow of the US government should generally be the kind of thing that forces one off op-ed pages. Besides which, I’d really like to hear the details. Which general does Sowell want to take over? Pace? That would make sense, considering Sowell’s views on teh gay. And how would this be an improvement? I suppose this general could violently suppress dissent on the war, making it go on longer, but as much as I’d love Sowell to admit that this is what he wants I doubt he will. Really, Tom, I want more coup talk!
